I recently came across the before-and-after photos Erik took of our hardwood floors when we had them refinished a few years ago. The results were so impressive that we didn't want to put the furniture back. It's hard to believe that the house in this photo is a place where real people live.

It looks like a room from a paint advertisement, not an actual home where the hot water heater falls apart and health insurance is purchased and there are always dishes to wash.
Of course, the floors look a little more lived-on these days but it was still completely worth it to do this. In fact, floor refinishing is one of my top five home improvement projects that you should pay someone else to do.
It's a big, messy job made much easier by writing a big check. All we had to do was move all the furniture and stuff (and by "we," I mean Erik and Carl) and when we came back from our summer vacation, we had pretty floors. Magic.
Before the magic could happen, Erik chipped out the tiles from the front doorway and then scraped up the linoleum from the suncorner, which was a sticky job made much easier by a heat gun.

See all the befores and all the afters in the album.

This is amazing. I'd like to do the same at my house, but the thought of moving all that furniture (and finding a place to put it all) is a big deterrent.
