Cover Up That Gray

Hey kids. Ever let down the hem of your black pants to find a gray line where the original hem was? Here's a trick: cover it up with some ribbon.

I used matching thread and sewed a short, narrow zig zag just catching the edge of the ribbon on both sides.

More Spring Things

We came home from a vacation this week to find the tulips up, the grass green, and the trees in bloom. It's beautiful here right now.

I was glad I managed to get out some spring conkey before the flowers arrived this year. My mother made us four small quilts when we got married. I try to hang the springy one in time for the three Es of spring: Easter, Equinox, and Erik's Birthday.

About six weeks ago, I realized the three Es were about to happen almost all at the same time. So I hung the quilt and displayed some of our other treasures, including something everyone needs for springtime decor: a St. Patrick's Day Nativity.

Franklin's Canvas

The sewing is pretty slow lately but that doesn't mean I'm not getting my creative on. Recently, I really enjoyed painting with oil pastels for a project for Franklin. He bought a bunch of small canvases and distributed them to whomever wanted to paint them up. After we return the canvases to him, he plans to hang them in his apartment.

It's your typical big purple artichoke floating on the ocean.

So far, my painting has been well-received. Marcus told me that if he was at sea and saw that big purple artichoke, he would not hesitate to steer a course for it.

I've been compiling photos of everything I make with my hands in the GNHP :: Made album.

Easiest Tree Skirt Ever

Fold a tablecloth into quarters.

With chalk, mark the fold that will be at the back of your tree with chalk. You can also mark a quarter-circle in the corner and use it to draft a trunk-hole.

Unfold the tablecloth and adjust your trunk-hole. Mine was too big so I re-drafted it using a can of tomatoes.

Cut on your chalk line and around the hole. Using a sewing machine, zig-zag stitch up one side of the cut you just made, around the hole, and back out to the hem of the tablecloth. Or serge it. Or just leave the edge raw if you don't have a sewing machine or just don't care enough or both.

Wrap it around the base of a Christmas tree.

Add presents.

Merry Crafty Christmas.

Laura's Zest

Did anyone else who watched the Project Runway finale think Laura's runway music sounded like the Mos Eisley cantina band? Anyone?

If you're not sure, have a listen to my copy of "Laura's Zest."

Bags for Mums

I think the last sewing project I completed was these zipper bags. I filled them with little goodies and gave them to our mums for Mother's Day.

Img_1735

I had made zipper bags before. Each of those bags took about an hour of work - 10 minutes of cutting and sewing and 50 minutes of putting in the zipper. It was painful.

So for these two bags I used a pattern from the very appropriately named Lazy Girl Designs. This pattern includes their "trademark 'Sew Easy' zipper technique." It was quick as well as easy. As usual, you can read my review of the pattern at PatternReview.com.

Geometria

I found these little time-wasters on a quilting blog, but they're not just for seamsters. Anyone who is obsessed with enjoys patterns and symmetry as much as I do will love them.

My current favorites are the SnowFlaker, Sampler, and LinoTiler.

Christmas Hats

Christmas in Gloucester meant new hats for everybody.

I believe this photo was my Grandpa's first attempt at digital photography. The result is impressive. Of course, when you hand your camera to a guy wearing red pants and rainbow suspenders, you are pretty much guaranteed you are going to end up with some good stuff.
